TIS THE SEASON! It is that time of year again and if you are anything like me, you are starting to think about all of the New Year’s Resolutions that you should stick to but realistically will not.
But listen up and listen carefully…. This is one that should be on EVERYONE’S list and that you MUST not abandon! Trust me, you will #ThankMeLater.
New Year Resolution…
#1. I will only allow paraben and sulfate free products on my hair and in my home!
Whether it is Hair On Fleeek (shameless plug) or another reputable product, let’s start reading labels and here is why.
Understanding the terms
First things first….What do those terms even mean? No one has time for a full on chemistry lesson, but here it is in the Natalie G’s cliff notes edition.
- They’re chemicals. Parabens are chemicals used to prevent bacteria and act as preservatives in deodorants, lotions, shampoos, and most other beauty products we use daily (simply out, this benefits the company and not our hair).
- Sulfates are cleansing and foaming agents that are found in products like body washes, toothpaste, shampoo, etc.
At the end of the day, what you need to know is that they are harmful. Some parabens can impersonate the activity of the hormone estrogen in the body’s cells, and as we all know, that is associated with certain forms of breast cancer.
Even though the verdict is still out on JUST how harmful these ingredients are, we are encouraging you to be proactive and SAFE over SORRY in keeping them out of your hair and homes!
Sulfates cause drying, hair loss, irritation to your scalp and are known for fading color because they break down build up of the natural “good” hair oils you produce.
Also, keep in mind that companies, which I won’t name by name, are trying to outsmart us by replacing sulfates with other chemicals, which can sometimes even be worse.
To avoid this, look for fruit or veggie based cleaning ingredients.
Last but not least, here is your cheat sheet to know if your products contain these chemically laden products:
- Sulfates = If your shampoo lathers, it contains sulfates.
- Parabens are more difficult to identify BUT most of the common parabens also have “paraben” in their name i.e. — Propylparaben, Butylparaben, Methylparaben.
So there you have it! And come on, I am not asking you to give up your favorite wine, just nasty chemicals that are not helping you anyway. Together we can be compliant with this New Year’s resolution, because when it comes to health, what goes on our bodies is just as important as what goes into them.
We have lots of great products that will help you achieve HAIR ON FLEEEK, healthy hair WITHOUT compromising your health.
So let’s not only keep it sexy in 2017, let’s be smart and healthy too!
Until Next Year… Natalie G.
